With the proportion of people living in poverty at 25 percent in 2009/10, Uganda has surpassed the 2015 Millennium Development Goal of halving the 56 percent poverty rate recorded in 1992/93. However, there is still much work to be done and the GVN Foundation is working to contribute towards further reductions in poverty. Through our Ugandan partner organization, we are currently supporting three key projects.

Nalusse Success Primary School Hot Lunch Program

Since February 2008, The Real Uganda has provided a hot lunch for 120 students and 9 teachers at Nalusse Success Primary School in Mukono Town. Getting a hot lunch is important to these needy kids as many come to school without breakfast. Before the hot lunch program became free (it was $10 per term, but families could not often pay) many kids ate only a small dry bun for lunch. They are now served a cornmeal-like cake (posho) with beans. As a result, students are energetic and able to learn better. This program is contributing to their personal development and to the development of Uganda in the long run. But it costs a lot of money over time. Money the school simply does not have. In order to keep the program going we need sponsors. The annual budget is about $5,000 – which includes all food, cooking oil, salt, charcoal and salary for the cook.

Passionate Children and Elderly Care (PACE)

PACE runs a primary school for children whose parents can’t afford tuition. There are 85 children coming daily between the ages of 4 and 14. Over the past 3 years, funds were raised to purchase land and build a 4 classroom building for PACE. In 2010, we built a house for the Director and teachers. Our next step is to plan the future of PACE.

Meet Meddie Kasumba, a 21 year-old man dedicated to teaching needy and orphaned children. Meddie works at PACE teaching English and Social Studies. In 2007, he graduated secondary school, and was awarded a place at Uganda’s Makerere University to study for a Bachelor of Education. Sadly, without tuition, he was unable to join. We aim to change that. Meddie has shown a maturity beyond his years and a passion for teaching we don’t see everyday in Uganda. We want to see him lead PACE into the future. For that, he’ll need further education. Medde can attend university on the evening/weekend program and continue his teaching duties at PACE, where his accommodation and daily meals are covered. Annual costs of tuition and books for this 3 year program are $2,500.

Hope for Africa Children's Village

Hope for Africa Children’s Village offers education to rural children otherwise unable to attend school, due to lack of money for fees. The program allows parents/guardians to work at the school farm, clearing land and maintaining the garden in return for tuition and lunch for their children. Unfortunately, actual cash money is hard to come by in this local subsistence economy. The Real Uganda raises funds for the school to help administrators operate and expand. Since 2007, we’ve donated iron sheets, bricks and cement to help build the initial classroom buildings. Today, we aim to pay teachers wages on par with government run schools, $150 per month. Currently, the teachers are paid half that. As a result, staff turn over is high and quality of education is low. In order to pay qualified teachers, year round, living wages, we need about $15,000. The school can provide 50% of that. Can you help us provide the rest?
